Russians coming to stage ‘Don Quixote’

LED by the artistic director Vyacheslav Gordeyev, an illustrious ballet master, artists from the Russian State Ballet will bring “Don Quixote” to Chinese audiences.

Based on two episodes from Cervantes’ novel, the dance is about an absurd adventure of Alonso Quixano, a gentleman who has read so many chivalric stories that he determines to rekindle chivalry and rename himself Don Quixote.

The ballet retains the farcical episodes of Quixano, but portrays him as a warm-hearted character. It focuses on the love between Sancho Panza, an uneducated servant hired by Quixano, and Kitri, an innkeeper’s daughter.

In the final act, Sancho and Kitri will perform a pas de deux on their wedding day. As the couple’s steps synchronize, the dancers will show their mutual affection.

As one of the most joyful and festive classic ballets, “Don Quixote” allows performers to express personalities and demonstrate difficult moves. Viewers can enjoy a variety of forms, including character dance and classic dance.
