Royal Danish Ballet ‘Napoli’

Royal Danish Ballet will bring their classic performance “Napoli” to Shanghai next month.

The three-act ballet premiered at the Royal Danish Theater in 1842. It is not only one of August Bournonville’s signature masterpieces, but also a shining example of Danish interpretation of Romanticism.

In “Napoli,” we meet Teresina and Gennaro, a young couple who must suffer greatly before they can finally be united.

Their boundless love and Christian faith lead them to defeat the powers of darkness and enjoy happiness.

Choreographically, Bournonville sought inspiration from domestic as well as foreign styles of dance.

Ever since its premiere, “Napoli” has remained one of Denmark’s favorite ballets and one of Royal Danish Ballet’s most influential repertoires.

Originates from 1748, the Royal Danish Ballet is the world’s third oldest ballet company.

After the Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet has the largest number of Balanchine ballets in its repertoire in Europe.
