Romantic illustrations turned musical

THE Taiwan-produced musical “Turn Left, Turn Right,” a story of a fateful romance starring Taiwan pop singers like Waa Wei, Wang Dawen and Joanna Wang, will come to Shanghai Culture Square this month.

The Musical is based on “A Chance of Sunshine,” a 2008 book by Taiwan illustrator Jimmy Liao, and is ready to present its fourth version in Shanghai.

The story features two people who live in buildings right next to each other, yet they never meet as the man always turns right when he leaves his building and the woman always turns left. After an accidental encounter at the park, the two fall in love, but a rainstorm blurs the phone numbers they had exchanged on a note. A search and wait for another encounter follows.

Liao’s detailed illustrations and the poetry-style text helped a lot in adapting the romance as a musical, said George Chen, the music director of the program.

“Some people may feel restricted by original pieces for their re-creation, but not me. I feel great about composing with images in my head, and Liao’s work perfectly supports my creative process,” Chen said. All those beautiful images will be presented on stage not only through music, but also stage settings supported by multi-media designs.
