‘Riverdance’ returns for 20th anniversary

THE popular Irish dance drama “Riverdance” will arrive in Shanghai next month as part of its 20th anniversary celebration tour.

“Riverdance” has toured 467 cities since its premiere in 1995 and more than 25 million tickets have been sold for the performances.

Though it has also been a frequent visitor to Shanghai over the past 10 years, some changes can be expected for the upcoming performance at Shanghai Culture Square.

“Riverdance” went through big changes and improvements in the first two years after its birth, yet didn’t change between 2000 and 2009.

The long-running show disappeared from the stage five years ago as the troupe worked on adding new elements.

“You will see the changes in the upcoming show,” says Zhang Ligang, manager of the “Riverdance” China tour.

For example, an Irish female group dance has been added to balance the strong masculine nature of the previous version. A Russian dance that was only used in the original version returns to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

The troupe has also tailored the show for the Chinese market by adding Chinese music. Zhang says it is meant as a special gift for the Chinese audience and is not a permanent addition to the show.

Long-time favorite scenes like the tap dance and dance battles remain in this version of “Riverdance.”
