Pounding out some serious rhythm

New Zealand percussion band Strike will give a concert at Daning Theater as part of its 2015 tour in China next month.

Titled “Between Zero and One,” the concert will feature the latest works by composer John Psathas and tell the story of the history of the universe.

“Psathas” was inspired by the Big Bang theory, and this multimedia production mixes ancient melodies from Africa, Persia and Greece. In addition to standing drum kits, band members also use Samoan drums, round chrome balls, xylophones and glockenspiels.

Australian artist Tim Gruchy created the interactive projection that transforms the whole stage to a piece of art.

Founded in 1993, Strike is a group made up of New Zealand’s top percussionists, who combine theater, dance, invention and rhythmic intricacy to create powerful and imaginative productions.

The group is also committed to performing works by New Zealand composers and artists.

Strike gained international recognition with acclaimed performances at the Cervantino International Festival in Mexico in 2002 and the 2001 Journeés de la Percussion in Paris.

They have released two albums — “Strike: New Zealand Percussion Music” and “Strike: Sketches.”
