Piano recital of Romantic love triangle

THE piano recital “To the Eternal Lover” about the romance between Robert Schumann, his wife Clara and Johannes Brahms will be staged at Shanghai Concert Hall by young Chinese pianist Xue Yingjia to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the death of Clara — one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era.

Clara played a very important role in shaping the two great composers Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

With a long concert career, Clara changed the format and repertoire of the piano recital and the tastes of public. Together with Robert, she helped Brahms in his music career and was the first to perform works by Brahms publicly.

Clara was romantically involved with both her husband and his student Brahms.

“Without Clara, there probably would not have been the Schumann and Brahms we know today,” says Xue.

The recital will start with Liszt’s adaption of Beethoven’s “To the Distant Lover,” which sets the romantic theme, while Xue carefully selected four more romantic works by Robert, Clara and Brahms.

Clara Schumann’s “Romance in E Flat Minor” and “Romance in A Major” are selected as they were composed for Schumann and Brahms respectively. Robert Schumann’s “Fantasy in C Major” was composed when he suffered under Clara’s absence due to her father’s interference. Brahms’ “Piano Sonata No 3 in F Minor” is one of his earliest works.

“People are often interested in hearsay when talking about a love triangle. But Brahms was a great man who held both admiration for Clara and respect for Robert throughout his life. After Robert’s death, he kept on advocating his work and taking care of Clara regardless of all difficulties,” says Xue. “That reminds me of the line in ‘A Tale of Two Cities’: ‘I see that I hold a sanctuary in their hearts…and I know that each was not more honored and held sacred in the other’s soul, than I was in the souls of both.’”
