Pianist to join Shanghai Ballet on stage

PIANIST and ballet dancers will share the stage at Shanghai Concert Hall, presenting an art feast for eyes and ears Friday night.

“Ballet and music is never separated, but it will be quite fresh to witness both pianist and dancers on the same stage,” says Xin Lili, president of the Shanghai Ballet.

The Shanghai Ballet cooperated with a piano trio last year, and it will be the first time it joins hands with young local pianist Xue Yingjia on stage.

The concert will be composed of Baroque and contemporary classics, such as Bach’s French Suite No.6 in E Major, Prelude and Fugue in E Major, and English Suite No.5 in E Minor in the first part and Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque and L'Isle Joyeuse, as well as Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 4 in F Major in the second.

Modern ballet is chosen for Bach’s works, which features beautiful rhythms, while classic duet with pointe shoes will be used for Debussy’s richly colored works.

“It was inspiring already when I heard Xue playing the works for the first time,” says Wu Husheng, principal dancer of the Shanghai Ballet.

“Having the piano right on the stage creates a great atmosphere for soul collisions between the pianist and dancers,” says Wu. “It is like he influences me by the music while I feed him back by my movements.”

Xue agrees about the commonalities between the two arts. He said he often intentionally watched videos of Bach’s court dances in order to enrich his imagination for the music.
