Pianist pays tribute to music educator

PIANIST Zhu Haobing will hold a recital in honor of composer and educator Wang Jianzhong on May 18 at Shanghai Concert Hall.

Entitled “Chant on the Keyboard,” the performance will feature traditional Chinese pieces adapted for piano by Wang himself. These will include songs such as “A Hundred Birds Are Paying Homage to a Phoenix” and “Clouds Chasing the Moon,” as well as folk tunes like “Liuyang River” and “Red Flower Blossom.” Zhu will also premier an original work by Wang titled “Inspiration From Reading ‘A Dream of Red Mansions’.”

Zhu is a former student of Wang, whom she describes as a dedicated proponent of spreading traditional Chinese culture through music.

After graduating from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Zhu continued her studies at New England Conservatory of Music and the Music School of Michigan State University. During her time abroad, Zhu discovered that her interpretations of traditional Chinese pieces were especially popular among overseas audiences.

“These traditional Chinese pieces are filled with history, legends, philosophy and aesthetics. We’ve neglected them (in China) since we are so familiar with these pieces. But the feedback from overseas audiences inspired me to dig deeper,” says Zhu.

During the upcoming recital, Zhu will share her thoughts on selected pieces and fond memories of working with Wang.
