Photojournalism show at local center

“WORKS from Istanbul Photo Awards 2014” is now on display at the Shanghai Center of Photography.

Established by the Anadolu Agency, the Istanbul Photo Awards are meant to honor images that have the power to mobilize people and cover unforgettable events of the past year.

Over 12,000 photos were entered into the contest. Of these, 100 are on display at the center’s show, including several of the contest’s big winners.

The Photo of the Year 2014 prize was awarded to Australian Photographer Daniel Berehulak. His image shows an 8-year-old Ebola victim being taken away by health officers in Liberia a few hours before his death.

First prize in the news single category went to Jerome Sessini for his heart-wrenching photograph “East Ukraine Conflict,” which features the remains of an MH17 passenger still strapped to his seat in a Ukrainian field.

First prize in the news story category went to Oliver Weiken’s “Gaza War,” while the top awards in the sports single and sports story categories were awarded to Hangst Matthias and Javid Nikpour respectively.

The award’s jury this year consisted of nine professionals, including Time Magazine’s international photo editor Alice Gabriner, Getty’s senior director Georges de Keerle, and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Liu Heung Shing.

Liu, who is also the founder of the Shanghai Photography Center, was the first accredited photographer for Time in China in 1978. He later joined the Associated Press as a foreign correspondent photojournalist in Beijing. In 1992, Liu received the Overseas Press Club Award and shared the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News for his coverage of the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2004, Liu was named by Paris Photo as one of the 100 most influential photographers in the world.
