Photographer pairs models with necklaces

SHANGHAI photographer He Zhaoya will show the connection between female portraits and jewelry works in her debut show next week.

The exhibition, “Enchanting,” will present 22 portraits of a Shanghai model wearing necklaces designed and made by the photographer.

“Combining portraits with necklaces has been my creative pursuit for the past eight years,” she says.

As a photographer with a penchant for black-and-white portraits of Shanghai women for over 20 years, He finds that necklace is as expressive as clothing in photography.

“The neck attracts attention easily and the necklace in different design and material reflects the taste and personality of the wearer,” she says.

“I designed a necklace for a woman, a Chinese-American. I used black lacquer as the base to make an eight-ball pendant which looks like a Chinese lantern from a distance to express her cultural confidence,” He adds.

The photographer-jeweler makes necklaces by herself because she thinks each necklace is a work of art with its own expression and cannot be standardized.

“It gives me creative freedom and allows me to serve a small group of women who are confident, independent and strong,” she says.

All the necklaces she created were custom-made for women according to their cultural and professional background. They include famous writers, fashion designers, entrepreneurs and news presenters.

She often breaks away from tradition and experiments with new styles and materials.

“It’s a way to highlight the necklace itself. When you wear it, it seems like the crystals are part of your body,” He explains.
