Philadelphia Orchestra back among old friends
THE Philadelphia Orchestra is returning to Shanghai this week, bringing three concerts from May 25 to 27 in different forms to kick off its 2017 Asia tour.
Schumann’s “Fantasy” series, Mozart’s “Clarinet Quintet” and Dvorak’s “Piano Quintet” will be staged at the chamber concert. Audiences will also hear Beethoven’s “Overture to the Creatures of Prometheus,” Stravinsky’s “Petrushka” and Brahms’ “Symphony No. 4.”
The American orchestra will premiere “Dreamland Overture” which was created by Da Jie and commissioned by the Shanghai Media Group on May 27, in addition to the more popular Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5.”
This is the fourth time for the Philadelphia Orchestra to visit Shanghai after it signed a 5-year resident program with the National Grand Theater in 2013.
In the five years, the orchestra would need to tour and engage in community exchange throughout China, and develop good relationship with local audiences.
A new 5-year partnership will be launched soon in concert performances and cultural exchange. That includes Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Shanghai Media Group and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
“It is always a thrill to return to China and make new friends through music on the other side of the world,” says music director Yannick Nezet-Seguin.
“It’s very much like a homecoming, as we share the unique power of music to unite people across language and culture. I am especially looking forward to working with the young musicians at the Central Conservatory of Music (in Beijing).”
The Philadelphia Orchestra has developed a long-time relationship with China since 1973, when it visited China together with the then US President Richard Nixon.
