Peking operas with romantic appeal
PEKING operas often feature historical legends or stories about politics and the military. But now fans will have a rare chance to watch four romantic pieces on March 27 and 28.
The performances are part of an annual festival of classics and modern plays at Shanghai Oriental Art Center, which will run from March 13 to April 26.
The romances are inspired by the four seasons. They are combined to depict a multifaceted image of love and emotion.
Wang Peiyu will collaborate with Shi Yihong on “The Wujia Slope” and “The Pavilion of the Imperial Stele.”
“The Wujia Slope” is the story of a general reuniting with his wife after 18 years apart while “The Pavilion of the Imperial Stele” tells the story of how a couple in love clear up a misunderstanding.
Known for her deep and mellow voice, Wang is one of the most popular sheng (male) actors in Peking Opera. Shi is a versatile artist known for her elegance and all-round ability to act, sing and dance.
Young Peking Opera performer Suo Mingfang will cooperate with veteran artist Fan Yongliang on the classic “The Wandering Dragon Toys with the Phoenix,” a romance between an emperor and a civilian girl. Suo will display the stunt of qiaogong — raising the feet to a tip-toe position to depict the elegant walking gestures of a lady.
Fu Xiru and Cai Xiaoying will present an episode from “Yang Silang Visits His Mother.” Set in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the story follows general Yang as he tells his wife, a princess from an enemy state, his real identity.
The festival includes 26 performances by 50 well-known artists of traditional theater covering Peking, Kunqu, Yueju, Huju, Huaiju, Chuanju, Huangmei and Qinqiang operas.
