Peking Opera series comes to Shanghai

To commemorate its 60th anniversary this year, the China National Peking Opera Company will bring a series of Peking Opera classics and modern plays to the stage in Shanghai over the National Day holiday.

The series will feature singing excerpts and acclaimed plays such as “Legend of the White Snake,” “The Orphan of Zhao,” “Female Generals of the Yang Family” and “The Red Lantern.”

“The Legend of the White Snake” is a tragic love story about a young scholar and the mythical Lady White Snake. “The Orphan of Zhao” is an ancient play that is often described as a Chinese version of “Hamlet.” Martial arts are featured in “Female Generals of the Yang Family,” a play about legendary women generals in ancient China. “The Red Lantern,” a modern play that enjoyed huge popularity in the 1960s, will surely evoke nostalgia among older viewers and delight younger audience members.

On October 5, a special performance of various Peking Opera vocal schools will be staged for young people to learn about the diverse charms of this timeless art.

“This is the first time we will stage so many performances in Shanghai,” says Zhang Jianguo, a Peking Opera artist and official with the company. “Many of the shows will include novel elements to attract the younger generation.”
