‘Papirus’ shows kids some heart

DESIGNED for children over 5 years old, “Papirus” toured around Europe for years, but will make its Asian premiere at Shanghai Children’s Arts Theater today and tomorrow.

The physical theater “Papirus” is a show about the magic that comes when people allow themselves to communicate with the heart.

A tired man walks alone with a large suitcase and a piece of paper. Meanwhile, a lonely woman looks for a place to sleep. The two discover one another and start communicating through gestures, shapes and painting. They establish a game filled with curiosity, generosity and hope, where sharing becomes a way of communication.

Paper is the most important prop with the actors using it in a variety of imaginative ways they will delight young ones.

Physical theater, though popular in Europe, is still rather new in the Chinese market for children, according to Liang Xiaoxiang, general manager of the arts theater.

“We hope that we can provide children better access to these types of shows to help trigger their imagination,” says Liang.
