Painter relies on powerful instincts

IT takes most artists years to establish their own “language” but Mianhua has found her painting voice in a shorter time.

Jing’an Kerry Center is now hosting an exhibition of her works through January 18.

She hasn’t had any formal training, preferring to paint based on her feelings and emotions.

Mianhua grew up in the countryside of east China’s Anhui Province and says she has always felt a powerful emotional connection to colors.

“When I am painting, I never allow anyone around me,” she says. “It's so personal, I feel extremely uncomfortable if someone is there.”

Wearing her hair long and natural and clad in a long skirt with exotic accessories, Mianhua is reminiscent of Echo, the late female writer and traveler from Taiwan.

Mianhua has traveled frequently, but for now, is content living in Shanghai.

“I frequently move to different cities for different reasons. Sometimes just because a place is on the sea,” she says.

Over the years she has been a writer and editor and a member of the Authors’ Association of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
But one day she says her heart convinced her to take up a paint brush.

But one day, she gave up everything in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, and arrived in Shanghai.

“At that time my family didn't understand me at all. My brother thought that I was crazy for abandoning a bright future there,” she says. “But I knew what kind of life I wanted. It was time for me to go back to painting.”

The painter admits she relies on her instincts, creating works that are pure, simple and feminine.

Gorgeous colors, clear brush strokes and strong contrasts suggest a post-impressionist and fauvist influence.

Her works evoke early modernism but are somehow different. Lines are reduced and replaced with a natural transition of color.

“When I am painting, I feel like the hues are swirling around me,” she says.

“Sometimes when I can't fall asleep at night, I will go to my nearby studio. There is such a soothing power there and I easily calm myself down and doze off. Painting is my most beautiful dream. I imagine that I have a pair of wings and can fly.

“I always believe everyone has a dream at the bottom of their heart. As years go by, some carefully preserve the dream and some lose it on the way in order to move rapidly,” she says.
