Old radios showcase life in a different era
K11 Art Mall is hosting an exhibition paying tribute to the history of radio as part of the first Shanghai Radio Festival. The exhibition runs until October 17.
A total of 37 antique radios are on display to showcase its development. Items include a 1920 radio made by Radio Corporation of America, a short range receiver produced by Emerson Radio Corporation in the 1940s and a portable radio cassette recorder produced by Shanghai Huafeng Radio Factory in the 1980s.
All the radios are from Zhang Minglu’s collection. The 70-year-old retired worker says his affinity for radio started when he was a child. He now owns about 3,000 radios.
“I loved to assemble radio sets when I was a primary school student,” Zhang recalls. “I started to collect radios 20 years ago. All these sets are witnesses to the history of radio, and now radio technology can be used in a lot more fields.”
Visitors can learn how radios work through old photos and video sequences. They can also participate in a live radio show and learn how to operate a radio program.
The Shanghai Radio Festival runs until October 24, including a new media forum about the opportunities and challenges in the radio industry, an award ceremony for radio programs from around the world and charity film screenings for people who have visual impairments.
Famous radio anchors will be invited to narrate and interpret the movies.
