New solo marimba works coming to city

PERCUSSIONIST Andrew Chan of Macau will return to Shanghai for a solo concert, vowing to debut several new pieces.

An acclaimed young marimba artist who graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Chan has been an active solo and ensemble player performing at international festivals and concerts. In 2010 during the World Expo Shanghai, Chan performed at the Australia Pavilion.

He has also been a guest musician for Sydney Sinfonia and Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 2007, performing at the Sydney Opera House.

Chan was featured as an emerging marimbist in the Australian Percussion Gathering 2010 and was the only solo performer to share the stage with distinguished percussionists like Steven Schick and Sylvio Gualda.

In 2011, Chan performed in The YouTube Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas.

At his concert in Shanghai, most pieces haven’t been performed in China before, including Steven Mackey’s “Beast” and Keiko Abe’s “Itsuki Fantasy for Six Mallets,” as well as classic marimba works like Iannis Xenakis’ “Rebonds A/B” and David Maslanka’s “My Lady White.”

The final piece of the program is “Stereo is King” by Mason Bates, originally written for percussion trio. Chan arranged the score for solo performance himself.
