Musical pairing from young artists
A group of young performers will present two original musical productions at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square on March 16-19.
“Experience the Taste of Romance,” set to be staged tomorrow and on Friday, tells the story of a singer-composer searching for inspiration in a small restaurant. He falls in love with the restaurant owner who only serves steamed rice with braised pork as a memory between her and her ex-boyfriend.
“The Shoot,” to be staged over the weekend, features a warm-hearted lawyer who is frustrated by her failure in a case and amazingly travels back in time to Yan’an, in Shaanxi Province, in 1937. Her experience there helps restore her confidence and belief. Both shows were produced by a local company named Musicals, composed of young performers.
Former singer-composer Zhang Zhilin, president of the company, has always wanted his works heard and appreciated. An encounter with the musical “Shrek” years ago initiated his passion about creating similar shows of his own. Zhang composed all the songs in the two musicals.
“It will be a better platform to help beautiful melodies reach audiences, considering the declining recording industry,” said Zhang. “But there are still many obstacles ahead of us, as the market has just started.”
Both two productions were well-received in previous stagings at smaller venues, and Zhang believes it will be both a challenge and opportunity to test their popularity at Shanghai Culture Square.
“It is never easy, but I am lucky to have company,” said Zhang.
