Musical explores culture of Taiwan

THE musical “Taiwan as a Young Man” will be staged at Shanghai Art Theater on April 17 and 18.

It has been adapted from Jiang Xun’s novel of the same name. Jiang wrote it while traveling around Taiwan, recording what he saw while also recalling his childhood.

The stories of the grass-roots history of Taiwan’s development and the regional customs in the novel are said to be helpful in understanding the island’s culture.

Stories of 10 different towns in Jiang’s novel were adapted into musical chapters. While some of the stories remain unchanged from the novel, a few were adapted to suit the stage.

Jiang encouraged readers to explore the island and make their own conclusions about life and the island.

“Just to look at the people who led a different life, or visit the communities that you once lived in. It might be even more interesting to talk with the people whom you knew in childhood, and listen to their stories,” writes Jiang. “That may lead to reflections on your own life.”
