Musical celebration of youthful desire

“SPRING Awakening,” a Broadway-style rock musical based on Frank Wedekind’s original drama, will be staged with an all-Chinese cast at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square from September 23-25.
Set in late 19th century Germany, “Spring Awakening” tells the story of teenagers experiencing the inner and outer tumult of their sexuality.
The original musical featuring lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik earned four Olivier Awards and eight Tony Awards, including for Best Musical and Best Original Score. To maintain the poetry and meaning of the original production, the show’s musical numbers will be performed in English, with dialogue translated into Chinese.
“The struggles of this age are delivered through poetic music and lyrics. It will be an instantly recognizable work, and we are increasingly confident about our choices,” says Fei Yuanhong, vice president of SAIC Shanghai Culture Square and producer of the musical.
“When the music sounds, audiences will feel like they’re breaking away from the contemporary world and entering a world of spring and youth,” says Fei.
The show’s roughly 20 musical performers were chosen by director Bjorn Dobbelaere, from the Royal Academy of Music, and his team. Ding Zhenying, who plays the lead heroine, performed in the 25th anniversary version of “Miss Saigon” in London’s West End. Liu Lingfei, who plays the male lead, has participated in Chinese musical productions of “Ultimate Broadway” and “Dracula.”
