Music awards recognize top talent

THE 19th China Music Awards will be held tonight at the Venetian Macau. Launched in 1994, the annual award show is one of the most significant events in the Chinese music industry, honoring both celebrated and emerging young singers, composers and producers who have made outstanding contributions to the field of music over the previous year.
The gala will be broadcast live on Channel V and Star TV.
This year Hong Kong singer Karen Mok, Chinese-American singer-songwriter Wang Leehom and “super girls” Li Yuchun and Zhang Liangying will be in competition for best singer.
Yu Feng, a talented young singer who rose to fame thanks to the reality show “The Voice of China,” is nominated for the award of best new artist.
Taiwan singer Richie Jen, a promoter for this year’s gala, says fostering up-and-coming musicians and artists is vital to the future of the local recording industry.
Jen has been nominated for the best singer award. His new effort “Grandma’s Penghu Bay,” inspired by a campus ballad, has received a nomination for the year’s best film song as well.
The gala is expected to attract notable artists from Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States, including Pharrel Williams, Taylor Swift, Rain and Masaharu Fukuyama.
