Music and art capture ‘The Moment’

A cross-media art exhibition incorporating abstract paintings and piano music is underway at the Shanghai World Financial Center.

The show, called “The Moment,” displays 34 paintings created by famous Japanese graphic designer Katsuhiro Tsugita. Each painting depicts an exciting moment from an athlete in several sports, including athletics, wrestling, boxing, sumo, ski jumping, ice hockey and swimming.

For each of the abstract paintings, Chinese pianist Chen Jie has created a piece of music so viewers can listen through their headphones, while a loudspeaker, in front of each painting, broadcasts the typical sound from each of the sports.

“I’d like to showcase the beauty of sports,” said the 67-year-old Tsugita, who also collaborated with some global brands such as Dior, Cannon and Asics for their promotion on the Chinese market.

The cooperation between Tsugita and Chen, who is a deputy professor at the music department with the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, is commemorating the 45th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations, according to the Shanghai World Financial Center.

Meanwhile, the center is also offering a series of cultural and sports activities within the building for the summer period. A yoga workshop will be held on the 100th floor on August 9 and 23, while a basic golf training session is scheduled on August 16. A family oriented family garden event will be held on August 19-20 on the second floor.

To beat the scorching heat, a beer festival will be held in the Sunken Garden on the B1 floor on each Friday from tomorrow till August 18, with beer, food, live shows and games.

A concert and freestyle talk show will also be held for office workers within the building.

Date: Through August 13, 7am-9pm

Venue: 1/F, Office Lobby, Shanghai World Financial Center
