‘Murder for Two’ gets local treatment

A Chinese version of the Broadway musical comedy “Murder for Two” is being staged at Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center through January 15.

This wacky mash-up of classic murder mystery and old-school musical theater follows Officer Marcus Moscowicz, an aspiring detective who attempts to solve the murder of a prolific novelist in hopes that he’ll be promoted.

While investigating the crime, Marcus meets 13 zany suspects, all played by one actor. From the bespectacled wife of the victim to the victim’s gruff, cigar-smoking therapist, Marcus must get to know the suspects and make sense of their wild stories in order to solve the crime.

The original musical co-created by Kellen Blair and Joe Kinosian made its world debuts in Chicago in 2011. The story was inspired by Agatha Christie’s 1945 novel “Ten Little Indians.”

“The story is scary as people died one by one in a closed space, a theater. But the whole detective process has never lost its sense of humor — this is the most charming aspect of this killer musical,” says Tian Shui, the director of the Chinese version of the play. Tian is also an award-winning actress.

The play is presented on-stage by two actors, who perform all of the show’s roles and music.

“The humorous Chinese lyrics are down-to-earth, which makes this show, adapted from an American play, very appealing and closer to local audiences,” commented Ye Hua, an audience member.

Liu Lei, the producer of the play, interpreted the Chinese lyrics. “The process of writing the Chinese lyrics for this play was definitely very exciting,” Liu says.

Combining the original American humor and authentic Chinese expressions was the key to the musical’s lyrics, according to him.
