Multi-media gems for kids at ASK

THE Art Space for Kids, which opened in 2014, is one of the youngest performance venues in Shanghai, and has attracted Tony Reekie, one of the world’s biggest names in children’s theater.

Reekie was the director of the acclaimed children’s program at the Edinburgh International Festival between 1996 and 2015.

He is now ASK’s global lab director.

In this year’s program list, there are several highlights.

For example, “Like cat and dog,” a multi-media interactive theater from Spain, will be showed at the venue in February. It is a multidisciplinary show, a fusion of visual arts, performing and music. It speaks of relationships and feelings that provoke the viewers. The story revolves around Nacho, an insatiable artist who found a way to bring his drawings into life and communicate with them. It will be in bilingual.

Another highlight, also in bilingual, will be presented in March. It is called “Anatomy of the Piano,” a multi-media one-man music theater by Will Pickvance from the UK.

The scenario is simple: what if someone wanted a spaceship for Christmas but was given a piano instead? Part recital, part dissection, the show interweaves whirlwind piano playing, songs, stories and hand-drawn projections. Surreal humor, wild passion and imagination combine to fuel a dream during the journey through the historical landscape of piano.

“The writing’s clever, almost poetic, and his piano playing exudes an effortless, almost careless expertise,” The British Herald said about the show.

The professional team at the Young ASK have a big ambition to promote global top-notch productions for children between the ages of 0-12 and their families in China. The 300-square-meter theater is also the first independent one to offer access to kids aged 0-3 with specific advice on age/month/group of different productions.

It facilitates interaction with the artists by seating children in a relaxed manner and ensure that they are concentrated.
