Looking at past National Day events

Many watched the Victory Day military parade in Beijing earlier this month. Those still feeling the excitement of that day coursing through their veins may want to check out the “Salute to the People’s Republic of China — Picture Posters Collected by Yang Peiming” exhibition at the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute’s museum through October 8.

The poster exhibition features nearly 55 picture posters divided into two sections — one under the theme of China’s National Day during the 1950s while the other displays picture posters created by Yu Yunjie (1917-1992), a veteran local artist.

“In order to celebrate the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, we selected 30 posters featuring the parade that celebrated National Day,” says Fu Jun, vice director at the museum. “Some of them are being unveiled to the public for the first time.”

In the early 1950s, picture posters were an important form of communication and the best artists were often hired to create them, Fu says.

“These posters were born during a special period of history and can never be reproduced,” Fu adds.

The poster “Strong National Defense Force” features a military parade in Tian’anmen Square in 1955. “Shanghai Bund at May Day” depicts people waving red flags and shouting slogans on the Bund in 1956.

The posters have one thing in common — they are full, either with people and buildings or with striking colors, especially red.

“Yu Yunjie was one of China’s first generation of oil painters,” Fu says. “But he also created some important picture posters in the 1950s.”
