Lion and zebra unleashed in musical

Animals of the Central Park Zoo will come to life on the stage of Shanghai Majestic Theatre this summer as the musical “Madagascar” arrives in the city.

Lion Alex, zebra Marty, giraffe Melman and hippo Gloria are the stars of the musical based on the Hollywood movie series.

The story follows the group of zoo residents on their escape and the discovery of a new world on the island of Madagascar, home to lemurs.

“It is a simple story that most children know already. So there won’t be any barriers for them to appreciate the show though it is all presented in English,” Pan Zhipeng, vice president of Juooo, a company that introduced the production to China, said.

The popular musical, ideal for children aged 3 to 8, will tour six cities in China from June to August.

Apart from great music and lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan who have been working for children’s programs for years, the musical will feature fantastic stage design and costumes by Tony award-winning David Gallo and Gregg Barnes.

“It takes six containers to take all ‘Madagascar’ to China to help the audience feel like they are at the Times Square in New York, Madagascar’s beach in Africa, and the kingdom of the lemurs,” said Michel Boersma, the executive producer of the show.
