Li Zongxi brings ‘Lies’ to Shanghai

“lies,” a new play from theater director and playwright Li Zongxi, is coming to Shanghai this month.

The show, which debuted in Beijing last September, tells the story of a pregnant woman abandoned by her boyfriend just one month before her due date. Soon afterward she witnesses the accidental death of a young couple and decides to pass herself off as the dead woman. She attempts to enter the deceased man’s family, who are wealthy and can provide for her baby.

According to Li, the show’s heroine “is kind, but has to tell lies to have a peaceful life.”

Born in Taiwan and graduated from Shanghai Theater Academy, Li was formerly a theater teacher in Kaohsiung city. He founded his own drama troupe in 2000 and his breakthrough work “Rouge Box” was a Taiwan Broadcast Golden Bell Award nominee in 2005.
