Key works available at art auction

THE Rongbaozhai Autumn Art Auction takes place this weekend in Shanghai with a number of significant pieces available.

Modern ink-wash paintings, calligraphy and contemporary artworks by big-name artists like Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) and Qi Baishi (1864-1957) will go under the hammer.

Four fan paintings by Qi, considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century along with Pablo Picasso, are the highlight of the event.

“Peach for longevity” was painted by Qi in 1948 when he was 88 years old.

His painting “A group of chickens” reflects a longing for his childhood.

Luo Zhongli, director of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Art and vice chairman of the Chinese Oil Artists’ Association, rose to fame with a realistic portrayal of a weather-beaten Chinese peasant titled “Father” in the 1980s.

While that’s not going to be auctioned, two of his other important paintings with similar themes will go under the hammer.

One features a couple hugging and the other a Tibetan boy in a farm building.
