Italian pianist knows the key for ‘Travel Time’

ONE of Europe’s most acclaimed pianists will take the Shanghai City Theater stage this weekend.

Italian pianist Vincenzo Balzani will present a piano recital titled “Travel Time” on Saturday, where he will perform classical scores from Chopin, Schubert and Liszt. Chopin’s “Ballade No. 1 in G minor Op. 23,” Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” and Schubert’s “Impromptu in A-flat major, D. 899 No. 4” are all scheduled for those lovers of classical music.

The highlight of the recital is “Soiree de Vienne No. 3 in E major,” which witnesses the friendship between Schubert and Liszt in the 19th century. The melody was created by Liszt based on the Schubert’s original waltzes. Liszt incorporated his own interpretation of Schubert’s music into the score.

Two years later he was awarded the “Liszt” prize at the Maria Canals competition in Barcelona.

As a concert artist, he has recorded extensively for radio and TV and has recorded several LPs and CDs, including works of Scarlatti, Mozart, Hummel, Beethoven, Chopin and Schubert.

Since 1973, Balzani has been teaching the piano in music academies. Now he often serves as a judge in international competitions. He also holds courses, master classes and lectures in Italy and abroad.

In addition to his activities as pianist and teacher, Balzani is also artistic director of a several other international piano competitions.
