Inkstones, fans a reflection of the past

TRADITIONAL culture is on display at Yuyuan Garden, where two exhibitions are underway — one featuring inkstones and seals, the other fans.

One of the highlights is a rare inkstone made from a Duan stone that looks like milky white jade. This piece was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in South China’s Guangdong Province. Such inkstones are the most prized in the country since most are either dark brown or dark purple. It was used to grind cinnabar, a bright red mineral.

The inkstone is displayed in the Pavilion of Listening to Billows inside Yuyuan Garden. The exhibition is courtesy of Han Tiangheng Museum in Jiading District.

“In the hustle and bustle of Yuyuan Garden, we are trying to create a moment of peace. Here we hope visitors can get a hint of the world of China’s refined scholars,” says curator Han Huizhi.

The exhibition also features seals made in both the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties and other inkstones dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Each stone has an inscription filled with profound meaning.

Some of the works by respected artist Han Tianheng will also be showcased.

Meanwhile, the annual Chinese fan culture festival is taking place at Yuyuan Tourist Mart’s Gold Plaza. It provides insight into how an item used for cooling down in the summer became a cherished form of art.

Dozens of artistic bamboo and wooden fans made by skilled craftsman in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing are on display. Visitors can even try their hand at painting and writing on fans.

Wang Fuwu, a famous calligrapher in his 70s, showcases his original fans based on Buddhist classics. Shi Haixia, a post-80s generation designer, showcases her fans known for their distinctive colors and images.

Organizers say the festival combines tradition with innovation and each fan tells a story.
