History and creativity on a pedestal
A SOLO exhibition by Xu Zhen is running at the Long Museum on the West Bund to celebrate the first anniversary of the museum opening.
Born in 1977 in Shanghai, Xu is a leading figure among the young generation of Chinese artists.
Xu engages in an artistic practice that takes in numerous mediums, including painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance.
Within the 30,000 square-meter space, the exhibition showcases more than 100 works, which include not only his earlier representative individual works form the late 1990s, but also a series of new works produced after Xu’s MadeIn Company launched the “Xu Zhen” brand in 2013.
The exhibition’s slogan — Witness the Creation of History — brings to light the sense in which this exhibition echoes history and cultural innovation.
The artist continually breaks down the predetermined mode of thought, deploying everything from within the farrago of global culture.
Highlights include “European Thousand-Hand Classical Sculpture” installation, “Arrogance” set of artworks, and new works including the installation “Eternity — The Soldier of Marathon Announcing Victory, A Wounded Galatian.”
With his characteristic humor, Xu intervenes in all manner of subject matter concerning global culture.
With a taut expressiveness, he integrates a Western spirit with Eastern culture assembling 19 different Western classical sculptures of various forms, borrowing from the shape of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin in Buddhist iconography.
The work deals with both the sense of form and spirituality, manifesting a vigorous vitality which dumfounds the viewer’s visual perception.
The exhibition also presents a series of Xu’s earlier representative individual works including the video “Shouting,” created in 1998.
On the crowded streets of Shanghai, Xu suddenly bursts out screaming — the footage capturing the frightened and bewildered reactions of the people around him.
Xu won the prize for “Best Artist” at the China Contemporary Art Award in 2004.
He participated the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001 — the youngest Chinese artist ever to have done so — and has since exhibited his works widely.
