Gucun park hosts running event

A RUNNING event will be held this Sunday at Guncun Park.
The event will include a 5km school race, a 10km adult race and a half marathon. Participants can register at the park from 8:15am to 9:15am. Shanghai Running organized the event.
Founded by a group of expatriate running enthusiasts in 2012, Shanghai Running aims to increase runner participation and enhance the running community in Shanghai by providing quality running events for runners across the spectrum from complete novice to experienced master. Runners of all ages and abilities are welcomed to the events. It has organized 16 running events in the city since 2012.
About 250 runners participated in its last event in June, and more than 100 people have so far signed up for the event this weekend. And seven international schools committed to have their students participating in the school race.
Most of the runners are expats, but an increasing number of Chinese showed up for the last few races, according to Michael Morris, founder of Shanghai Running.
Though the running community in Shanghai was small compared with other big cities when Shanghai Running was founded, the social environment has improved.
“I think that China is experiencing a running boom similar to that experienced in the UK in the 1980’s when the establishment of the London Marathon saw significant increase in running popularity. Particularly with the Chinese runners there seems to be more conscious awareness of the health benefits of running and running as a leisure experience,” says Morris.
Date: October 18, 9:30am for half marathon; 9:40am for school 5km race; 9:50am for adult 10km race
Tickets: 150 yuan for school 5km race, 200 yuan for adult 10km race, 200 yuan for half marathon
