Garden festival promises family fun

THE Shanghai Family Gardening Festival allows visitors to experience the fun of gardening for themselves in a beautiful natural setting.

The festival, which runs through May 20, takes place at a sprawling 40,000 square-meter venue in Minhang District’s Pujiang Town. Some 800 varieties of plants are on display in several garden areas, including a 3,000 square-meter clematis garden as well as a garden which references the work of famed Spanish architect and designer Antoni Gaudi.

Eight balconies and courtyard displays also showcase various horticulture styles and techniques which visitors can draw from to decorate their own homes. Meanwhile, visitors can get their hands dirty in a number of DIY gardening activities. They can also sign up for forums and seminars on growing various plants at home.

Visitors can bring waste items such as biscuit boxes, old shoes, broken jars and beverage bottles to the festival and learn how to turn them into gardening wares.

The festival is part of the 2015 Shanghai Public Green Festival, running between March and October, and is co-hosted by the Shanghai Flower Association, the Shanghai Landscape Architecture Gardening Trade Association and the Minhang District Greenery Commission.
