Eclectic art exhibit coming to Rockbund

UGO Rondinone, the internationally acclaimed artist, will have his first exhibition in China, titled “Breathe Walk Die,” beginning September 13 at Rockbund Art Museum.

Born in 1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland, and living in New York since 1997, Rondinone’s oeuvre takes up a unique position in the contemporary art scene.

He has developed many precise and obsessive series — from clown sculptures to stone figures, target paintings, masks, oversized wax light bulbs, stripe paintings, landscape ink drawings, bronze still-life objects, video and sound installations.

Now he advances extremely diverse techniques, combining abstract forms with raw materials, exploring themes of fantasy and desire, and branching out in literature and poetry, contemporary cinema and the visual arts.

The artist refuses to conceive of his solo exhibitions as displays of artworks but rather as total art statements, offering visitors a visual and emotional experience combined with poetic and critical observations.

Bringing back colors

Rondinone says: “Since 2007 all my exhibitions have used the natural colors of the material that was used in the production of the work: stone, clay, earth, bronze or aluminum. It’s now time to bring back all the colors of the spectrum. This exhibition will combine different color works from the past and the present into one unifying installation.”

The exhibition consists of several layers, each a different work or group of works. Among them:

One new neon sign in rainbow colors will be produced as the title of the exhibition “Breathe Walk Die;” Horizon wall paintings fully cover the walls of the museum from the first to the fifth floor, each floor showing three graduation of colors and the ensemble developing the full color spectrum of the rainbow; a pair of clown shoes, part of a group of seven shoes each representing a day of the week; and a performance of 40 clowns existing in the gallery spaces, titled “Vocabulary of Solitude.”

The 40 clowns are the highlight of this exhibition. The figures with colorful costumes, white masks, black eyelashes and rainbow wigs will be positioned in different parts of the museum, sleeping and meditating.

Rather than actively entertain viewers, the clowns will sit and lie on the ground, sleeping and meditating, distancing themselves from the viewers. Their faces will be strangely white with long, black eyelashes, as if they are aliens embarked on a floating journey.
