Dumas’ tragic love story comes to town

THE renowned National Theatre in Belgrade is bringing its well-received drama “The Lady of the Camellias” to Shanghai.

The play, based on the novel of French writer Alexandre Dumas, is a tragic love story between Marguerite Gautier, a courtesan suffering from consumption, and Armand Duval, a young bourgeois. The forlorn love story has been interpreted in numerous languages.

“Love or hatred, good or bad, justice or injustice, sincerity or hypocrisy, empathy or envy ... you will decide for yourselves,” says Jug Radivojevic, director of the drama. “You don’t have to admit it to anybody, nor to yourselves, just remain quiet, because in the end, there is only silence, or as our Nobel Prize winner liked to say — the world has suffered more misfortune from what was said than from what wasn’t.”

The National Theatre in Belgrade is one of the most significant institutions in Serbia. It used to tour around the world and received acclaims from both critics and audiences.

Nowadays, the theater consists of three ensembles — drama, opera and ballet. During its 147-year-long history, almost all the great European artists have had guest performances on its stage, and a number of foreign companies as well.
