Doubly impressive version of classic

SHANGHAI Ballet is staging a Valentine’s Day treat with a new version of Tchaikovsky favorite “Swan Lake” on February 13-14 at the Shanghai Grand Theater.

Co-produced by the Shanghai Grand Theater and Shanghai Ballet, it features 48 swans — double the usual number of dancers — to create a spectacular visual experience.

Shanghai Ballet principal dancers Fan Xiaofeng and Wu Husheng will play the roles of Odette/Odile and Prince Siegfried.

Choreographer and director Derek Deane is the former artistic director of English National Ballet and the English National Ballet School. He has introduced what has been described as an eccentric but romantic new ending to the famous ballet.

Shanghai Ballet first worked with Deane in 2001, also on a production of “Swan Lake,” and in 2005 staged his version of Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Then in 2010, he choreographed Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” for the company.

Last year, Shanghai Ballet invited Deane to make some adjustments to the production of “Swan Lake” performed by the company for more than a decade, and he suggested doubling the number of supporting dancers.

Among the world’s best-loved ballets, “Swan Lake” tells the story of Prince Siegfried’s love for the swan queen Odette, their battle against the evil sorcerer Rothbart, and a fateful encounter with the Odile the black swan.

The production will go on a 24-date tour of Holland at the end of the year.
