Curtis-linked artists to play Shanghai

GRADUATES and performers from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music will play in Shanghai on October 13.

Led by violist and Curtis president Roberto Diaz, Grammy-awarded guitarist Jason Vieaux, violinist Nigel Armstrong, cellist Jean Kim and Chinese pianist Chen Jie will collaborate for a concert at Shanghai Concert Hall, celebrating the 110th anniversary of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.

The team will present “Histoire du Tango,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” “Jongo”, Brahms’s “Piano Quartet No.1 in G Minor,” as well as a contemporary Chinese piece “Red, Tree and Cliff.”

“The program was selected to as rich variety of music as possible in the one single night,” says Chen, who hopes Curtis-affiliated artists will make regular visits to Shanghai in the future.

“Red, Tree and Cliff” is a work from composer Zhou Tian, commissioned by the Curtis Institute of Music for its global tour in 2012-2013.

“The piece was inspired by the aesthetics in traditional Chinese landscape paintings,” said Zhou. “It will be an interesting experience to have Western instruments and contemporary music language interpret a classic Chinese romance.”
