Creative realism in the real world

“THE First Round — The New Look of the Realistic,” showing at Xuhui Art Museum through February 8, explores the possibilities for realist oil painting in a visual arts world where other styles dominate.

Curated by Fu Jun, vice director at Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Museum, the exhibition features 12 Shanghai artists aged between 30 to 45.

“Through varying concepts, emotions and subjects, they explore freedom and creativity in their own realistic style,” said Fu,

While realism dominated art education and practice in China for decades, the fast-paced development of society, with the growth in popularity of other art forms, has seen it somewhat marginalized and perceived as old-fashioned.

“The artists chosen for the exhibition try to fuse something new with the old art genre,” Fu said.

Standouts include work by Zhang Chenchu, a young artist renowned for his realistic portraits of celebrities and historical figures.

These include politicians, movie stars, artists and others in the public eye.

For this exhibition, Zhang is displaying portraits of a diversity of figures.

They include Alibaba founder Jack Ma, tennis icon Li Na and Guo Meimei, who found notoriety flaunting a lavish lifestyle online with claims — later found to be false — that she worked for China’s Red Cross.

Together, they evoke a realistic yet magical world reflecting modern society.

“We can see the influence of new media, installations and performing arts in realist oil painting,” Fu said,

“Realist painters refer to images on the Internet or films and incorporate collage techniques, broadening the scope of realism. Visitors to this exhibition will see this in the works on display.”
