Comedy romance to tap local actresses

THE local drama “I have you for this Life,” adopted from Hong Kong romance novelist Cheung Siu-Haan’s well-known novel “Three A-Cup-Women,” will be staged at the People Grand Theater in November, as one of the most anticipated romance dramas directed by He Nian.

The show tells the stories of three women, one of whom will be played by Shanghai singer and actress Huang Ling. The other two roles are open for public auditions. Those who feel they are suitable to portray the characters in the novel can apply online for the chance, says Zhou Yi, the producer, who has staged over 100 shows in Shanghai and is famous for her previous cooperation with He Nian in “Must Women Have Money?”

Published in the 1990s, the novel is about women's emotions and struggles in looking for true love. The story line centers around women and their bra sizes.“I am looking forward to the challenge this time, as well as the partners who we still don’t know” Huang says.

Cheung, the writer of the original work, will participate in the selection process. Born in the 1960s, Cheung has published over 40 novels, most of them in the romance genre. Her works have appeared in newspapers and magazine numerous times, particularly in the Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily.

She also founded the magazine Amy in 1998 in Hong Kong. It’s not the first time for Cheung’s work to be adopted by He. Her first novel, “The Woman on the Bread Tree,” published in 1995, was directed by He in a theater presentation several years ago. The local theater director is very popular, as most of his works have achieved market success and become popular among young audiences.

“Most of my works used to be comedy and made audiences laugh. But the upcoming show will touch them and make them cry with happiness,” says He. “The story will be a ‘love revelation’ to audiences.”

Ticket sales have opened, and early-bird audiences who buy now can get 15 percent off.
