Classics to go under the hammer

A collection of ancient and modern Chinese ink-wash paintings and calligraphy works will go under the hammer at Poly Auction House from June 4 to 8 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing.

Some of these masterpieces will be displayed at a preview show in the following two days at the Shanghai Grand Theater.

Aside from artworks, the auction will also include antiques, ancient books, jewelry and luxury watches.

One of the auction’s highlights is a piece by Fu Baoshi (1904-65), one of the masters of modern Chinese art.

“The Splendor of Maoshan Mountain” was created by Fu in June 1965. Three months later, the artist passed away.

The daunting work in the size of 1 meter by 2.7 meters was considered his last big piece and was created at the peak of his career. The floor price is about 165 million yuan (US$24 million).

Hailing from Xinyu, Jiangxi Province, Fu went to Japan to study the history of Oriental art in the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1933. He later translated many books from Japanese into Chinese and carried out his own research.

He brought Japanese visual elements to Chinese ink-painting techniques. His landscape paintings employed the skillful use of dots and inking methods, creating a new technique encompassing many varieties within traditional rules.

Fu was noted for creating an old, elegant style through his integration of poetic atmosphere and painting techniques. Another standout of Fu at the Poly auction is “Mountain Ghost.” The work was created in 1945, inspired by “Songs of the Chu.” Some critics called it the “Venus in the East.”

Besides Fu’s works, some works created by other heavyweight names such as Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong and Qi Baishi will also be auctioned off, including Zhang’s “Five Colored Lotus” and Xu’s “Five Roosters.”
