SHANGHAI Chenshan Botanical Garden in Songjiang District is awash in a sea of flowers with the opening of a grand Chinese rose exhibition, the largest exhibition of its kind every organized in the city.
The display, covering a total area of 34,000 square-meters, features more than 800 varieties of Chinese roses as well as about 60 Chinese rose trees, a recently cultivated species of flowering tree.
A two-kilometer walkway stretches through the display area, linking two flower-lined corridors and three main exhibition areas. Manicured landscape decked with Chinese roses form a backdrop to the overall display.
The exhibition features several types of rare roses that cannot be seen anywhere else in China, organizers say.
Planting roses has a long history in the country, dating back to the Spring and Autumn Periods (770-476 BC) and the Warring States Period (476-221 BC), when the beautiful flowers were widely planted at palaces. During ancient times, Chinese rose were believed to convey a message of love, park officials explained.
In addition to Chinese roses, peonies, irises and orchids are also now in full blossom at the garden, providing a feast for the eyes.
During the exhibition, a number of events, such as a group wedding, symphony concerts and a photo contest will also be held.
While the exhibition lasts, the garden’s operator will run shuttle buses to and from the Dongjing Station on Metro Line 9 during weekends as well as the May Day holiday, with buses leaving about every 20 minutes.
