Chanticleer plans Shanghai concert

American Grammy award-winning a cappella group Chanticleer will visit Shanghai for the third time and give a concert titled “Over the Moon.”

This concert features music by Gustav Mahler, Jaakko Mäntyjäarvi, Mason Bates, Stephen Paulus, Orlando di Lasso, Claudio Monteverdi, Josquin Desprez and others.

Founded in San Francisco in 1978, the group has 12 male singers and has also been dubbed “the world’s reigning male chorus” by New Yorker magazine.

Chanticleer has recorded music since 1981 and sold more than a million albums.

They are known for the sounds of nature, which the San Francisco Chronicle described as “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity.”

The group also is committed to performing new works by more than 80 composers including Mark Adamo, Mason Bates, Régis Campo, Chen Yi, David Conte and Shawn Crouch.

Musical America named Chanticleer “Ensemble of the Year” in 2008, when they were inducted in the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
