‘Carmen’ retold in flamenco

FRENCH composer Georges Bizet’s famous opera “Carmen” will be staged for Shanghai audience in the form of flamenco.

The dance drama will be presented by Spain’s Antonio Andrade Flamenco Company. Antonio Andrade combines the elements of love, passion, pride and death for this production.

The dynamic art form of flamenco has given a brand-new interpretation of this tragic love story of the independent and seductive woman Carmen who is killed by her lover.

Over the years, the flamenco version of “Carmen” has toured many countries and regions, including Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

It has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its ingenious choreography, spectacular stage effects and emotional storyline. Critics consider it “the highest level of flamenco play.”

Around 200 sets of costumes are featured in this drama. The dresses in gorgeous patterns and colors are tailor-made for the dancers. Original scores by Bizet is juxtaposed with elements of blues.
