Big anniversary for beloved stage show

STAN Lai’s beloved play “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land” is coming to Theater Above in March for a series of performances commemorating its 30th anniversary.

Written and directed by Lai and first staged by the Performance Workshop in Taipei, the play has long been a favorite among audiences and critics.

The play grew out of improvisation sessions between Lai and the show’s original cast, which included his wife, actress and theater producer Ding Nai-Chu. Most of these sessions were conducted in the living room of Lai and Ding’s apartment.

“Thirty years have pasted. We had never thought this show would have such a long life span,” says Ding.

The play centers on two drama troupes arranged to have rehearsals at the same time by mistake. One of the troupes is working on a production of the early-modern tragedy “Secret Love,” while the other is preparing to stage the period comedy “The Peach Blossom Spring,” which is based on a classical poem. The problem is, both shows are set to debut in just two days. With show time looming and only one stage to rehearse, drama and conflict become inevitable.

The shows will be performed in Chinese with English subtitles.
