Biennale attracts array of artists

THE 10th Shanghai Biennale, themed “Social Factory,” has attracted nearly 70 artists and art groups from 20 countries and regions. It is now running at the Power Station of Art through March 31, 2015.

Although the size of this year’s biennale is smaller, variety enriches the content. About 100 artworks — ranging from installation, video, photography and canvas to audio works — are showcased.

“Different from the previous biennales that focused on fast-paced development of the city, this year’s event requires visitors to cool down and enter into a carefully arranged world,” says Anselm Franke, a German curator and writer in charge of this year’s biennale.

One video, “On the Edge of Poem,” created by Huang Mingchuan, shows the recitation of works written by 100 poets in Taiwan through different dialects, reflecting the island province’s mixed culture.

One of the most popular works is a cluster of 60 telephone booths. This audio work created by Zhang Ding is titled “1999.” When visitors pick up the phones, they can hear 60 different things, such as a popular old song.

Although many visitors are not clear about the meaning of this work, they still like to pick up the phones one after another.

“That’s the interesting part of this biennale,” says Zhang Qing, an art critic and former curator of Shanghai Biennale, “Biennale is not an art fair. It doesn’t matter whether a visitor really understands the real meaning of the artwork here. Once they are touched or moved by these art pieces, then it already becomes an appreciated art experience.”
