Ballads from Chongming in concert

THE Chongming ballad concert “Wind Over the Sand” is coming to Shanghai Grand Theater at the end of January. It’s the first staging of Chongming folk songs in the form of concert.

Chongming ballads, classified as intangible cultural heritage, boast a history of more than 1,300 years. Affected by the geography and culture of Chongming Island, the Wu dialect ballads are high-pitched.

The ballads are slowly disappearing. In 2010, the Chongming government began collecting songs. Three years later, “Chongming Ballad Collection” was published. However, the public has hardly taken any notice.

The first Chongming ballad album “Tide,” produced by Shanghai Huiming Culture Communication Co Ltd will  be released soon.

The organizers have invited Shanghai Light Music Orchestra to perform nine songs on the album. State first-class composer and cantor Tu Bahai will conduct the concert. Du Cong, known as Asia’s first prince of panpipe, will also perform.

Date: January 31, 7:30pm

Tickets: 80-280 yuan

Venue: Shanghai Grand Theater

Address: 300 People’s Ave
