Art exhibit with an eye on future innovation

TONGJI University has launched an exhibition with over 100 design works from this year’s graduates of the College of Design and Innovation.

The exhibition, “Dive into Chaos,” features prototypes, videos and art installations on industry, visual communication, environment, digital media and jewelry.

Visitors walking in the main exhibition hall will strongly feel that the boundaries between these fields are blurred and overlapped, according to the organizer. Some design works have no physical forms and are based on innovative social service ideas.

The exhibition aims to express the idea that design is becoming more “chaotic” by integrating various disciplines and areas, said Lou Yongqi, the dean of the college.

“The students are demonstrating their attitudes, courage and power through this graduation exhibition,” he said.

In one work, a graduate, Gu Liwen, worked out a model of the future maglev train to solve Shanghai’s traffic congestion problem. The appearance of the train is based on the image of kunpeng, a mythical Chinese bird that can fly for thousands of miles.

Another graduate, Xu Jiajie, designed the interior of a future taxi, which looks like an airliner’s first-class suite, ensuring better communication between passenger and driver.

A series of jewelry themed on “tropical mood” by Tang Yuanfang incorporates various tropical fruits into the designs of eardrops and necklace.

With the popularity of shared bikes in the city, many students designed their versions of future bikes and electric bicycles, which aims to solve the challenges facing the bike-sharing scheme such as vandalism, rider violations and illegal parking.

Many of the works focus on public transport, medical service, education, media and waste recycling, which shows the students’ concerns toward social phenomena and their responsibility, the organizer said.
