Art documentaries to air on local TV

OUTSTANDING documentary films from home and abroad will be shown on the local Art Channel as a long-running and regular program for local audiences.
To kick off the series, an acclaimed documentary series produced by the BBC will be aired in its original version from tonight to July 11 at 6:30pm. The series is about the secrets and charm of the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Louvre in Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The series offers unique perspectives and insights into the museums’ construction and collections and contains many stories behind the items.
Officials from the Art Channel say the series will be followed by many other excellent documentaries about art and culture.
Also this month, Letv will present a series of original TV series and reality shows. Famous Taiwanese host Jacky Wu will offer a hilarious talk show series, while fashion celebrity Su Mang will produce an online series about the characters and stories of China’s fashion industry.
In the following months, BesTV will also present local TV audiences and Internet users the latest film productions including the police film “Overheard 3,” the sci-fi movie “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and the thriller film “The Great Hypnotist.”
Additionally, the 8th season of the BBC series “Doctor Who” and the new seasons of American series “House” will be aired on its website and IPTV channel. Children will be offered classic animations such as “Prince of Tennis” and “Detective Conan.”
Marseille Opera Orchestra
The Marseille Opera Orchestra is visiting China for the first time, led by music director Lawrence Foster. They will present arias from Bizet’s “Carmen” and “Suite de l’Arlésienne,” Gounod’s “Faust,” Rossini’s “The Barbiere of Seville,” Faure’s “Suite de Pelléas et Mélisande” and Saint-Saëns’ “Sansom et Dalila: Bacchanale.” The orchestra, founded in 1965, now has 88 musicians. Mezzo soprano Jennifer Holloway will be performing with the orchestra.

¡®Dora the Explorer¡¯
This children¡¯s musical is adapted from the popular TV cartoon series ¡°Dora the Explorer.¡± Dora, the little girl, is on an important mission to find the City of Lost Toys. She has to overcome all kinds of challenges on the way and will invite other children to help her accomplish her mission. She also teaches them new English words and prompt them to use new words to solve puzzles and move on in her exploration.

Ballet ‘Don Quixote’
The Royal Ballet is bringing its new critically acclaimed production of “Don Quixote” to Shanghai. It premiered at the Royal Opera House in September 2013, and is choreographed by Cuban-born British dancer Carlos Acosta. The Royal Ballet is touring this new production for the first time, and its only China stop is in Shanghai.

Drama about Love & Forgiven
Co-produced by theater artists from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Chinese original drama “Fly to the Sunset” will stage 12 shows in Shanghai. Inspired by songs of Taiwan late singer Feng Feifei (1953-2012), the drama tells a story about love and forgiven. Audience will have chance to think about the purest love and insistence on relationship in your life, according to the director Chen Zhichao from Shanghai.

Boys’ Choir
Local music lovers will be offered a concert by the Wilten Boys’ Choir. The repertoire includes sacred music for performance at church services as well as a wide spectrum of secular music ranging from classical children’s song by Brahms, Mozart or Schubert to popular melodies of opera and operetta. They will also perform Chinese songs such as “Jasmine” and “Filling The World With Love.”

Exhibition
Silk Road
For the past 15 years, Shanghai-native photographer Deke Erh has been on the Silk Road. It’s a one-man show, an odyssey that has taken in history, culture, relics and people. Now the photographer’s “One Man’s Silk Road — Deke Erh’s Visual Documenta” unveils the massive project that includes the photos that he captured, the objects he collected and the film he shot during his journey. Nearly 10,000 objects are showcased in four exhibition halls at the China Art Museum, covering an area of 6,000 square meters. Besides the exhibition, a seminar with experts, critics and scholars also discusses the value of the exhibition and the contribution of Erh made to the study of Silk Road with these pictures, historical materials and information he has collected for years.

Childhood Memory
Painter Li Shoubai celebrates old Shanghai and life in its picturesque shikumen houses and lanes. An exhibition featuring his paintings and paper-cuts are underway at his newly renovated studio. Li is famous for his vivid heavy watercolor paintings that feature detailed scenes from the old days, women lounging in patterned qipao or playing mahjong.
