Words of wisdom for graduates and high school seniors

GRADUATION: It is, of course, a very bittersweet experience. The next big step in life is going off to some exotic distant place to continue one’s studies and enter a new social circle. It’s both exciting and a bit frightening at the same time.
I am definitely looking forward to receiving my diploma and screaming “I did it!” But it all has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Graduation means goodbye to a lot of aspects in my life, some that were integral parts. It will be the last time I’ll ever see some people, as well as a departure from a city I’ve grown to call home.
I’m also leaving teachers, who helped me to grow and learn. When you’ve crafted a relationship with people whom you really click with, it makes it much harder to just sweep it away. So, all in all, an emotional time for all concerned. I will look back nostalgically and realize that this truly is the end of one long enjoyable chapter in my life.
There’s a few things that I am really looking forward to at Georgetown University. I can’t wait to delve into a subject that I’ve been itching to sink my teeth into since middle school. Then I will get the chance to work with some really accomplished professors. The college atmosphere is also something I’m excited about experiencing. It is the first step to roughing it on your own. Then there are the new opportunities from studying abroad, from electives, to embracing roles in a new community, to taking a defined job. In short, I guess I’m really excited about what comes after graduation. The introspection of figuring out who you are, what you enjoy, and who you want to be.
My advice to younger students: Now is the time to enjoy a few selective things above all others. Give your parents the thanks they deserve. Make sure they know how much you appreciate them. Before you know it, you’ll be wishing for father’s words of wisdom or mom’s home-cooked meals. Realize who your real friends are and make sure they know how much you appreciate them as well. Real friends are hard to find so keep in touch with those who you value. Don’t be afraid to enjoy your senior year a little, but don’t go crazy, you’re only in high school once.
School should always come first, but even if you make a mistake, it’s never the end of the world.
Hopefully I’m not becoming a little somber here, but realize the only currency that matters in the long-run is time. How you spend it will define your last year in high school. I wish you all the best up luck!
