Why I enjoy learning Chinese

FOR some, it may be challenging language to learn, but to this secondary school student who has spent 11 years in China, it is evident that the Chinese language is truly something special.

Like many students, I have had some difficult Chinese lessons over the years. However, I certainly appreciate the value of learning Chinese has had on my ability to interact with what I have come to call, “my city.”

Despite living here for more than a decade, what still amazes me is the plethora of words one can learn from the zany situations that arise in Shanghai. Whether it is finding yourself in an unrecognizable part of town and needing to ask for directions, or trying to communicate with a taxi driver, insisting that you have the right pronunciation, only to have the driver repeat seemingly identical phrases back at you. In short, the reason I love studying Chinese is because of the enjoyment you experience while learning the language, and the many intriguing stories you gather while doing so.
